Recently there has been a topic in the Corner bar about organizing a Basecamp-like event in Europe. Interest in such an event has been around for some time, but with the recent announcement from Google about its new 3D Basecamp 2008 event in the US, new interest in a similar community-driven event in Europe has skyrocketed.
A European community-driven 3D Basecamp (tentatively called SketchUcation 3D Basecamp) event is no longer a question of IF, but WHEN.
This month we have organized a competition to design a logo for the SketchUcation 3D Basecamp event (read more about it here).
The logo will give a face to the event and as we discuss more possibilities and options and get closer to dotting the i's and crossing the t's, we will set up a dedicated web site for the event and send out the invitations.
As you can read in the interview this month with Aidan Chopra, Google is very much thrilled to attend such an event.
However, we feel the SketchUcation 3D Basecamp event should be host to more than a few hundred people. We want as many people to be able to attend as possible! Hence the key to making this a succes is to combine our community resources. In the aforementioned topic quite a few people have already stated what their input can be. So in the next few weeks we are going to set up some facilities (a temporary forum or
web page on SketchUcation) where people can submit their ideas and / or resources. We can then start looking at a date, time, place and accomodations. If you think you can contribute in any way whatsoever then give us a shout! We will shortly announce the facilities with which we wish to organize the event through the forums, via a Global Private Message (board wide PM). Right now we are thinking about logistical experience (travel expense saving, planning of resources), location info (what cities have large event centers and are inexpensive), cost management, ideas for seminars and workshops, people that have access to beamers and other equipment, party organizers (yes we will attempt to throw a huge party that makes Google's Basecamp '05 BBQ look like a picknick), administrative experienced people, etc.
Maybe somewhat TOO classic for SketchUp folk. A hotel in Pecs, Hungary - one of the preferred places for a SketchUcation 3D Basecamp event.
Stay tuned for more info about this event.
Meanwhile check out our SketchUcation 3D Basecamp competition!
