For this tutorial you will need the Pipe Along Path and the Bezier Curves plug-ins, which you can find in the Extensions Index: http://www.sketchucation.com/extensions-index/.

Left: Start with a simple square.

Bottom: The finished designer lamp.

02

Step 1/6

Start creating a vertical Face.

1

Draw an arc on it.

2

03

Step 2/6

Draw a circle below the created Face (erase the inside surface).

3

Select the round Face, then select the Follow Me tool and click on the surface with the arc. This creates the sphere.

4

04

Step 3/6

Do the same to create the lines for the light bulb and the sting. Then use the Pipe Along Path plug-in as shown above in steps 4 and 5.

5

This is the final result you will have when you use Pipe Along Path. Group the entire mesh.

6

05

Step 4/6

Fist group the sphere, then create a box. Put it halfway over the sphere, then enter the group of the sphere and context-click and select Intersect with Model. Turn the sphere 90 degrees. Repeat the previous step and then delete the box we just made.

7

Erase the Faces of the sphere. Select each of the 2 circles independently and use Pipe Along Path to create the string. (7mm. thick). Then group the 2 stings. Make sure that the strings are smooth.

8

06

Step 5/6

Now copy the group just created and put it back on the same spot as the original group. Turn one of the two groups.

9

Then group those two and repeat this step a couple of times.  To create the result shown on the picture.

10

07

Step 6/6

You will notice that the group outlines get really big. So to make them smaller ungroup them so that each sting is in his one group.

11

Now place the light bulb and fittings in the middle of the sphere. And the designer lamp is done.

Hi, I just did this tutorial, its a great way to learn about the use and intention of the intersect feature as well as the pipe plugin. However, one thing you should note is that its VERY RAM intensive. To get a shape like the end result shown in this tutorial my computer almost freezes up.

Is there any way to do this without eating up all the system memory?

one way would be to create a translucent sphere….add woven texture of your choice ( rattan texture would be great)…add the lamp or u may use irender nxt to make the object a lighting fixture, then viola!!!!! simple fast and memory efficient

  4. Hi transkie…. You could do It your way however the problem you would have is that if you are making an product visualisation and you would zoom in on the lamp. You would see realy clearly that the lines would be flat insted of round. That fenomenon will also have a large effect on the shawdows if puton the light in the lamp. It would look a bit fake…

    Best alll
